Mnemosyne (short name Mneme) the Greek goddess of memory and mother of the Nine Muse. Ain't she a dish? |
"Since my stroke, I've seen everything upside down. (a condition known as Inverted Vision) It was difficult trying to make things out and it affected my balance. Since I participated in a session of MnemeTherapy in February of 2008, I've started seeing everything right side up and it's stayed that way." -Ken, Atlantis Health Care, Lantana, Florida Below you can hear an interview in April, 2008, with to Ken about what happened during his first session of MnemeTherapy™ If you can't hear Ken's testimony, that's OK because you don't need that to move on to the next question. |
Documented Testimonial |
Dr. Joe and Sarah Rowan. Sarah hired me as Executive Director and became my mentor. |
Frequently Asked Questions Q: Why can't I just talk to someone and have them explain it all to me and answer my questions? A: Because, I need to know some things about you. Are you self directed? Do you complete what you start? Can you read?( Are impatient feelings bubbling like Mt. St. Helen's?) Hope not! Besides, there's no operator standing by. The Art Without Boundaries Association is a "virtual" non-profit organization, which means we don't have any staff, or an office for that matter. (If you don't count my desk at home) We do everything online. Our mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals with Autism, Alzheimer's disease and other related disorders of the brain by promoting MnemeTherapy.™ To accomplish that, we train and certify artists to become Certified and Master MnemeTherapists. (That's why you're here.) A Master MnemeTherapist has advertised for help. Are you the person they're looking for? Q: MnemeTherapy? Never heard of it. It is a form of art therapy? A: No. Art Therapy is a psychological process and uses expressive or creative art with the goal of exploring deeper feelings. MT is not about exploring feelings, but rather about the brain and synaptic development. Our goal is to provide a rewarding experience, using everyday, pleasurable experiences in a unique combination: singing and movement, directed painting, story telling and praise, components that don't require supervision or licensing from the government. Even though the process is simple, we have had amazing results, as you'll see from the videos and documented testimonies as you proceed through the Q and A.
A: In 2000, I was hired as Executive Director of a small Alzheimer's Association Chapter. For an upcoming fund raiser, I started painting with Alzheimer's patients. In 2003, the chapter territory was assigned to a larger chapter, the "Making Memories" program was dropped and our office was eventually closed. A former board member ( Sarah Rowan, pictured with husband, and Alzheimer's patient, Dr. Joe, above left) invited me to come paint with patients for a fund raiser at a nursing home where her husband lived and we had our very first "documented testimony " of a dramatic improvement. Reviving the abandoned program, I worked on developing the process for use as my private practice. After many requests for training, I wrote a curriculum, trademarked Art Without Boundaries™, MnemeTherapy™ and incorporated The Art Without Boundaries Foundation with the mission to train artists in the process and assist them in opening their own businesses. We are now a professional association with graduates all over the country. Q: Why did you call it something unpronounceable?
familiar with another word, Mnemonic device. A memory help. MnemeTherapy™ is from Mnemosyne, short name, Mneme, [pronounced NEMMA rhymes with EMMA] the Greek goddess of memory and mother of the nine Muse. (To proceed to the next question, read or listen to Ken's story about his inverted vision and click on his photo.) I liked the idea of that our process encompassed her daughters as well, not only memory, but the Greek attributes for music, art, movement, history and story telling. Alas, we neglect Erato's erotic poetry and Urania's astronomy, but... τέτοια είναι ζωή! (such is life) So you don't get the wrong idea, we are only using her name like musicians use Muse or psychologists use Psyches. This is not a new cult worshipping a mythological Greek Titan:) (Someone actually asked that) With that cleared up...the following are some questions I've received and you also may have about our apprenticeship program. (Don't know how to go on? Go back and read...it's hidden there, I promise) |
