Debra LaBar, Asheville, NC
I was born and raised in New Orleans. My love of the exotic sights and
sounds of this unique city influenced my artistic senses from an early
age. Music and art is an integral part of every day there and I can't
image life without it. I've always thought I was an artist. We all sang,
danced, painted, and generally acted up! It was just a natural thing to
be in New Orleans.
While raising four children and moving to support my husband’s
career, I received a Bachelors Degree from Mary Washington College
in Virginia. When I worked as a Remedial Reading and Writing
Assistant in an elementary school, I loved helping at risk students
write and illustrate their own books. Their sense of achievement was
inspiring to me and I knew they were having an educational experience
they would never forget.
Once our four children were raised, my husband, Ed, and I bought a
small cottage in Asheville, North Carolina and I finally found time to
paint. Asheville, like New Orleans, has a very welcoming atmosphere
for all artists and an unlimited amount of support for our work.
Asheville also has a wonderful reputation for Special Education and
North Carolina’s beautiful setting and moderate change of seasons
has made it a great place for retirees.
When I came upon Arts Without Boundaries, I knew I had found a
business that I could really embrace and Asheville was the perfect
place to do it. I am extremely excited about this endeavor. The endless
possibilities of Art Without Boundaries and the hope that it can offer
Alzheimer and autistic patients made it especially appealing to me. My
stepfather is currently battling Alzheimer’s and it has been very hard to
watch him slip away. This program offers a little light in what is at
present such a dark prognosis. I feel privileged to be a part of that light
and look forward to spreading it as far as possible.”
