Barbara Shaw, Lacombe, LA I was raised all over the country and U.S. Territories. After my Dad retired from the Navy, I finished high school in California, and have traveled around the world ever since. I settled in the New Orleans area in 1980 and have been involved in the local art scene as a painter, sculptor, art teacher of both children and adults, arts activist, art workshop organizer, art show coordinator, art show curator, and art show judge. I've also done several pieces of Public Art. (You can check them out on my website: BarbaraShawArt.com) I am making up for lost time, as I was never allowed to do art as a child. In fact, I was 30 years old before I ever held a paint brush in my hand. I had been inspired by an art show on public television, so I started taking classes. The neighborhood kids started hanging around begging me to show them how to paint. I needed a part-time job, so I marched into the local YMCA with one of the paintings my son had done. I showed it to them and said, “I can teach a kid to do this in 2 hours, are you interested in hiring me?” And they did!!! After a few years, I felt like I needed some real credentials and so I went back to college while my daughter was attending University of New Orleans. We took some classes together and I graduated in four straight years with a degree in Fine Arts. It turns out that I'm a good teacher, as well as being self-motivated (you can interpret that as meaning that I will never work for Corporate America ever again). So being a Mneme Therapist is ideal for me!!! I really enjoy seeing the wonderful smiles of success when my students produce art they they had no idea they were capable of doing. Knowing that I am helping to improve their quality of life means that I am improving my little corner of the world, one individual at a time. I am thrilled to be part of the Art Without Boundaries Association. |
